It's Not About Me, It's About the Residents

Left to Right: Austin McBee, Stacy Luster, Dixie Vulgamore, Bob Speelman

December 31, 2019

NOTE: This was taken from the blog of Foundations Health Solutions leader Bob Speelman. Each week Bob works at one of our Foundations Health facilities in different roles. Whether working in housekeeping or as a nursing assistant, he sees firsthand how we embody the vision of our founder and nursing home developer, Brian Colleran, to be "A Culture of Care."

I traveled down to Wheelersburg to visit Clint Potter and his team at Concord Health and Rehabilitation Center. Clint is doing a fantastic job leading the team there and building our Culture of Care. One of the team members I had the honor of working alongside was Dixie Vulgamore. Dixie has been an STNA for 27 years and has been at Concord for 18 months. She's a veteran caregiver with a heart and love for caring for others.

The team on Dixie's unit is an STNA by the name of Stacy Luster, who is also a veteran STNA of 22 years, and Austin McBee, a newer RN. From the minute I started with the unit until the time I left, the call lights were going nonstop. Everything from needing to be toileted to getting them a glass of water to helping them transfer to their recliner. The day flew by, and the team was terrific.

I noticed Austin, the young, new RN was in and out of rooms constantly, and Dixie said, "That's Austin! We love him! He never sits still and is always helping out whether it's toileting residents, getting them ice water, passing meds, or doing a treatment."

Later in the day, Dixie, Stacy, and I were by the nurses' station. I told Austin, "These ladies are bragging on you. They were saying how much you help them out every day." He smiled, and Dixie said, "Don't tell him that he's going to get a big head." We laughed and then I asked him, "What makes you want to do that? Some nurses don't help the STNA's out like that." Austin looked at me a little puzzled and then responded, "It's not about me, it's about the residents." I loved that! That summed it up. That actually sums up our "Culture of Care!!"

"There are leaders and there are those who lead. Leaders hold a position of power or influence. Those who lead inspire us."

Simon Sinek

I worked with three amazing leaders yesterday. I left Concord completely inspired and proud to have Dixie, Stacy, and Austin on our team. They are the essence of Foundations and our Culture of Care.

Bob Speelman, STNA

Each week, Bob Speelman visits a Foundations Health Solutions nursing home. He works alongside a variety of departments to ensure Foundations Health is excelling in the vision of founder Brian Colleran's "Culture of Care." Foundations Health continues to practice the principles nursing home developer Brian Colleran instilled, such as resident and family satisfaction, positive employee culture, and investment in the community.
